Bus from New York to Philadelphia: The Easy Run Down the Northeast Corridor
The New York to Philadelphia bus is one of the most-travelled corridors on the East Coast, and Greyhound has been working it for decades. Booking a bus from New York to Philadelphia for a day trip to Independence Hall, an Eagles game, a Penn or Drexel campus run, or a weekend cheesesteak crawl? Pick your time, pick your stop, and book your seat using the search on this page. No airport check-in. No security queue. No driving in Manhattan. Your seat is sorted when you book.
Where Greyhound picks you up in New York
Greyhound stops in New York include New York (Hudson Yards Trailways), New York Midtown West, and Brooklyn (3 Av/38th St). Pick the one closest to where you're starting from. The MTA fully retired the MetroCard in late 2025, so use OMNY tap-to-pay with a contactless credit/debit card, your phone, or an OMNY card to get to any of them.
New York (Hudson Yards Trailways) is in west Midtown Manhattan, about a minute on foot from the 34 St-Hudson Yards 7 train. Penn Station is also a short walk for the 1, 2, 3, A, C and E lines, plus NJ Transit, LIRR and Amtrak. Show up 15 minutes before departure and you're set.
New York Midtown West is in the Garment District, sandwiched between 7th and 8th Avenues. Walk to Penn Station or Times Square-42 St in a few minutes; MTA buses run on 8th Avenue.
Brooklyn (3 Av/38th St) is in Sunset Park. Walk east to the 36 St / 4 Av subway for the D, N and R; MTA local buses also stop nearby. If you live this side of the river, easier than schlepping into Midtown.
How to get around Philadelphia when your bus from New York to Philadelphia arrives
SEPTA runs the trains, subways, trolleys and buses across Philadelphia. Most riders use SEPTA Key for tap-to-ride, and you can also tap a contactless credit/debit card directly at the gate. Greyhound stops in Philadelphia include Philadelphia (Schuylkill & Walnut), Malvern, and Camden Walter Rand Trans Center. Whichever stop you arrive at, you can be on a SEPTA train, trolley or bus inside a few minutes of stepping off the bus.
Philadelphia (Schuylkill & Walnut) sits on the edge of Center City and University City, just east of the Schuylkill River, a short walk from 30th Street Station for SEPTA Regional Rail and Amtrak. The SEPTA Market-Frankford Line at 30th Street and SEPTA buses on Walnut and Chestnut cover the rest. Heads-up: Greyhound is moving its central Philadelphia stop to the renovated terminal at 10th and Filbert Streets in Center City, so check the latest stop in the search above before you book. Check your ticket for the current pickup point.
Malvern is in suburban Chester County, west of the city. The SEPTA Paoli/Thorndale Regional Rail line at Malvern Station gets you back into Center City.
Camden Walter Rand Trans Center is in downtown Camden, NJ, right across the Delaware River from Center City Philadelphia. The PATCO Speedline Broadway Station is on site, one stop under the river to Center City; the NJ Transit RiverLINE light rail toward Trenton and NJ Transit local buses also pull in here.
What's on board the New York to Philadelphia bus
Free Wi-Fi. Power outlets at every seat. Reclining seats with extra legroom. Restroom on board. Your seat is sorted when you book, so there's no scramble at the curb. Want to pick a specific seat? Reserved seat selection is a paid add-on at booking. Pack a snack, charge your laptop, and get a couple of hours of work done while someone else handles the road. Standard Greyhound luggage allowance applies - check the latest at the Greyhound baggage policy page if you're packing heavy.
Best time to visit Philadelphia
Philly's a humid continental city. The most comfortable months are usually April through June and September through October, with mild temperatures, lower humidity, and Independence Mall at its best for outdoor wandering. Spring brings cherry blossoms along the Schuylkill River and Phillies opening day at Citizens Bank Park. Fall delivers clear skies, foliage along Boathouse Row, and the Philadelphia Marathon weekend.
Summer is hot and humid but stacked with free outdoor programming - the Wawa Welcome America festival around the Fourth of July, free concerts on the Penn's Landing waterfront, and Made in America on the Parkway over Labor Day weekend. Winter is properly cold, but the holiday season has its own draws: the Christmas Village in LOVE Park, the Macy's Light Show inside the old Wanamaker building, and the Mummers Parade rolling up Broad Street on New Year's Day.
Top things to do in Philadelphia
From the Center City Greyhound stop you're already in striking distance of most of these. From Camden, you're a quick PATCO ride under the river. From Malvern, the Regional Rail brings you in.
- Independence Hall and the Liberty Bell in Old City - the birthplace of American independence, free with a timed ticket from the National Park Service.
- Philadelphia Museum of Art on the Benjamin Franklin Parkway, with the famous Rocky Steps out front.
- Reading Terminal Market in Center City, the country's oldest farmers' market, packed with cheesesteaks, Pennsylvania Dutch baked goods, and DiNic's roast pork.
- The Italian Market in South Philly, the long-running open-air food market lined with bakeries, butchers and produce stalls along 9th Street.
- The Barnes Foundation on the Parkway, with one of the great Impressionist and Post-Impressionist collections in the world.
- Eastern State Penitentiary in Fairmount, the abandoned 1829 prison turned tour and Halloween-season haunted house.
- Citizens Bank Park, Lincoln Financial Field and the Wells Fargo Center in the South Philly Sports Complex - Phillies, Eagles, Sixers and Flyers all play within a few blocks of each other.
Center City is laid out on William Penn's grid - numbered streets running north-south, named streets east-west, with City Hall right in the middle. Once you've got that, you can find anything.
Why people pick the bus on this corridor
Once you factor in getting to LaGuardia or Newark, the security queue, and a cab from PHL into Center City, the door-to-door time on the bus is competitive, and the bus drops you straight in Center City or right across the river in Camden. No check-in. No security. No baggage carousel. Your seat is sorted when you book - no online seat-selection fee like the airlines. Show up 15 minutes early, not two hours. Day-trippers, Penn and Drexel parents, Eagles fans, and weekend food travellers all use this route constantly.
