Bus from Madison to Chicago
The bus from Madison to Chicago runs the Illinois-Wisconsin corridor between the Wisconsin state capital and the largest city in the Midwest, taking you from the campus-and-Capitol rhythm of Madison down to Chicago's lakefront, neighbourhoods and rail-museum-restaurant density. People take this route for sports — Bears, Cubs, Bulls, Blackhawks games — for music, for college trips between UW-Madison and Northwestern, for Wrigleyville weekends, for O'Hare connections, or for visits between family in both cities. Taking the Madison to Chicago bus is the easy way south if you don't want to drive the I-90 stretch and find parking in downtown Chicago when you arrive.
How to get to the Greyhound station in Madison
Greyhound buses to Chicago leave from one of two Madison stops. The main one is the Madison Campus stop at 200 North Lake Street, where buses board from shelters on Lake Street near the Gordon Commons terrace. As an on-campus location, it's well-served by Madison Metro buses and is within walking distance of the State Street pedestrian corridor and the Capitol Square.
The second stop is the Dutch Mill Park & Ride at 46 Collins Court, on the city's south side off the Beltline Highway and Stoughton Road, near an Arby's. That stop is most useful if you're driving in to leave a car for a multi-day trip.
Plan to arrive in good time before your departure to find your boarding spot. Have your ticket ready on your phone or printed. The Lake Street campus stop puts you within walking distance of the central downtown, the State Capitol, State Street and the Memorial Union — useful if you're staying in the centre.
How to get around Chicago when your bus from Madison to Chicago arrives
Greyhound services into Chicago pull into the Chicago Bus Station at 630 W Harrison Street, between Desplaines and Jefferson Streets in the West Loop. From there, the rest of Chicago opens up immediately — the Blue Line subway runs nearby at UIC-Halsted, the Loop is a short walk east, and Union Station with its Metra and Amtrak connections sits a few blocks north.
The CTA — Chicago Transit Authority — runs the L (the city's elevated and subway rail), the bus network and the famous downtown Loop. The Red, Blue, Brown, Green, Orange, Purple, Pink and Yellow lines between them cover almost every corner of the city, with the Loop downtown serving as the central hub. From the Greyhound station on Harrison, the Blue Line takes you out to O'Hare or back to the Loop in a few minutes.
Chicago is also genuinely walkable in the central neighbourhoods. The Loop, River North, Streeterville, Old Town, Lincoln Park, Wicker Park and the West Loop are all walkable inside their districts and connected by short L hops. The lakefront trail runs the length of the city and is one of the best ways to move between the parks, the museums and Navy Pier on a warm day. For Wrigley Field, the L's Red Line takes you straight there. Within the Loop itself, walking covers most of what travellers come to see.
Top things to do in Chicago
- Millennium Park and the Cloud Gate sculpture (the Bean), at the heart of the downtown lakefront, with the Pritzker Pavilion summer concerts and the Crown Fountain alongside.
- The Art Institute of Chicago, with one of the strongest collections of Impressionist and Post-Impressionist painting outside Paris, plus the American Wing's Edward Hopper "Nighthawks".
- The Architecture River Cruise on the Chicago River, the easiest way to make sense of the city's architectural history in 90 minutes.
- Navy Pier, with the Centennial Wheel, family rides and lakefront views, especially good on summer evenings.
- Wrigley Field in Wrigleyville, the historic Cubs ballpark — a game is the best way to see it, but tours run on non-game days as well.
- The Field Museum on the Museum Campus south of the Loop, with Sue the T. rex and strong anthropology and biology halls.
- The Willis (Sears) Tower Skydeck, with the glass-floor Ledge boxes that cantilever out over the city.
- The Logan Square and Wicker Park neighbourhoods on the Blue Line, with the city's strongest concentration of independent restaurants, music venues and bars.
- Chicago-style food — deep-dish pizza at Lou Malnati's or Pequod's, an Italian beef at Al's, a hot dog at any local stand. The food is part of the city's signature.
What's the right way to arrive in Chicago after the bus from Madison? Drop your bag at the hotel, take the Blue Line one stop east to the Loop, walk to Millennium Park, and let the city introduce itself by way of the Bean and the lakefront. Almost every Chicago itinerary that follows that arrival pattern works. Use the search bar on this page to check schedules and book bus tickets when your dates are firm.
