Greyhound Lines, Inc. and Shriners Hospitals for Children today announced a partnership wherein Greyhound will provide discount transportation to Shriners chapters for patients traveling to and from Shriners Hospitals for medical treatment.
Effective March 1, this six-month pilot program provides a 50-percent discount for patients under the age of 19 and siblings under the age of 12 with the purchase of an adult fare. Patients from New York, Arizona and Texas will be eligible for discounted travel to nine Shriners Hospitals in Boston, Mass.; Erie, Pa.; Philadelphia, Pa.; Springfield, Mass.; Los Angeles, Calif.; Sacramento, Calif.; Salt Lake City, Utah; Houston, Texas; and Galveston, Texas. If successful, the program will be expanded nationwide to include all 20 Shriners Hospitals in the United States.
“Greyhound is pleased to help the Shriners offset some of the $10-12 million yearly cost to transport patients in need of care,” said Steve Gorman, president and CEO, Greyhound Lines, Inc. “We are grateful to Congresswoman Eddie Bernice Johnson (D-TX) for helping create this partnership and to our interline partners Peter Pan Lines and Trailways of New York for their assistance.”
“With the help of Greyhound Lines, we can help even more children who are in need of our expert medical care,” said M. Burton Oien, President and CEO of the Shrine of North America.
